Mind map on ways to incorporate faces
I then decided to make a mind map as a way of working through some ideas and I focussed on the idea of faces and change.

Facial Expressions
Here I have looked at facial expressions. I believe that peoples faces are a Cycle because we are constantly pulling different expressions throughout our lives and this is never ending. Some peoples expressions change more than otheres and some people have dramatic expressions where as others are more subtle. However peoples faces are changing all the time because it is very hard to keep the exact same expression for too long. By looking at this image I liked the idea of expressing emosions however instead of showing this through facial movement I wanted to show moods through colours using make-up.

Picasso
Picasso
This image here is a prime example of Cubism. Here Picasso has builded the face up of shapes. This allows a different way of visualising a face.
Here Picasso is demonstrating the different angles and sides to a person all from the front view. This then creates an interesting and
an unusual face that we are not used to seeing.
IDEA 1
Pablo Picasso 25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973), was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and stage designer who spent most of his adult life in France. As one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, he is widely known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a portrayal of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.
Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marcel Duchamp are commonly regarded as the three artists who most defined the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics.
Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in his early years, painting in a realistic manner through his childhood and adolescence. During the first decade of the 20th century, his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. His revolutionary artistic accomplishments brought him universal renown and immense fortune, making him one of the best-known figures in 20th-century art.

I decided to look at these abstract images because colour here is used to express moods rather than accurate, realistic portraits. These catch a moment in time wich made this way of working extremely popular.
Francis Bacon
Francis Bacon
I then experimented using paint to try and atchieve a simillar effect as Francis Bacon's work. If I had the skills and technology I would have used photoshop. I tried this out as the paintely effect and the layers interested me.
From the mid-1960s, Bacon mainly produced portrait heads of friends. He often said in interviews that he saw images "in series", and his artistic output often saw him focus on single themes for sustained periods — including his crucifixion, Papal heads and later single and triptych heads series. He began by painting variations on the Crucifixion and later focused on half-human, half-grotesque portraits, best exemplified by the 1949 "Heads in a Room" series. Following the 1971 suicide of his lover George Dyer, Bacon's art became more personal, inward looking and preoccupied with themes and motifs of death. The climax of this late period came with his 1982 "Study for Self-Portrait", and his late masterpiece Study for a Self Portrait -Triptych, 1985-86.

Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol
I decided to look into Andy Warhol's work as he uses blocks of colour on faces wich to me suggests the idea of make-up and how it can be applied.

Here the the blueness around the eyes suggests vivid blue eyeliner to me
Andy Warhol (Self Portrait)
Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. Warhol's art encompassed many forms of media, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film, and music.

David Hockney
David Hockney
"We Two Boys Together Clinging" 1961, Oil on board
"Mum" this painting lead me to think about aging a face using make-up and how faces change over time so i looked at this youtube video of Lindsey Lohan's changing face - 25 years in 60 seconds.
This video here shows you how to apply old age make-up to the face wich i thought was interesting as it is against the norm of wanting to look youthful and beautiful.
He is also an important contributor to the Pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century
